However, there is little current need for investigations of this type, either because the data already have been obtained or because more sophisticated in vivo methods are now available. In the studies described in the last edition, pulmonary air content, total pulmonary blood content, pulmonary arterial and venous blood volume, bronchial vascular blood volume, capillary blood volume, and physical properties such as tissue elasticity and surface tension were determined.
