Sustainable Alternatives To Paper Towels
If you won't be using the herbs right away, shake off any surface dirt and submerge the stalks upright in a glass of water. To store for longer than a day, place the glass in a plastic bag, tie it loosely with a twist-tie, and refrigerate. Alternately, you can wrap the cuttings in a damp paper towel and enclose the bundle in a plastic bag. Either way, most herbs will stay fresh for up to three days when refrigerated.
The solutions should be made up daily with tap water to prevent loss of germicidal action during storage. The autopsy tables are rinsed after each autopsy with water, Hi-lex, and Haemosol. During cleaning, personnel should don protective gear (see below). Paper towels, gauze, and gloves used for cleaning should be disposed in biohazard bags, as described in the next paragraph. If contamination with radioactive material may have occurred, follow recommendations in Chapter 13. If large spills occur, the cleaning crew, during clean-up, must wear face shields or safety glasses, in addition to the usual protective garments. Absorb spill with paper towels. Broken glass and other sharp objects must be removed with mechanical devices such as dust pan and cardboard pusher, never by hand. For safe disposal of these objects, see below.
Wrap the filter with SaranWrap film, leaving two ends of the film unfolded. Place the wrapped filter on a paper towel and, using another piece of paper towel, carefully press the wrapped filter to remove excess detection solution from the unfolded ends of the SaranWrap film. For this method, the flat diaphragmatic aspect of the heart is placed on a paper towel to prevent slippage, and cuts 1.0-1.5 cm thick are made with a sharp knife, parallel to the atrioventricular groove. One firm slice should be used, or two slices in the same direction, avoiding sawing motions that leave hesitation marks. Each slice is viewed from the apex toward the base (Fig. 3-2), analogous to echocardiography imaging. The basal third of the ventricles is left attached to the atria. The basal portion is then opened according to the inflow-outflow method, as described earlier. short-axis, long-axis, and four-chamber planes are ideally suited for demonstrating cardiac pathology (10,11). Additional planes that have proven useful clinically and at autopsy include right ventricular long axis, left-sided two-chamber, right-sided two-chamber, transverse (horizontal, or foreshortened four-chamber), frontal (or coronal), lateral (or parasagittal), and others. Hearts should first be fixed...
Sectioning of cerebral hemispheres. (A) initial cut is placed through mammillary bodies. (B,C) the halved brain pieces are held down on the cutting board and sliced from the inferior surface toward the convexity. Cloth or paper towels under the brain will prevent the board surface becoming slippery from fluid dripping from the brain. When slicing cerebral hemispheres in this fashion, the limp optic nerves need to be propped up to avoid cutting them longitudinally. Fig. 6-12. Sectioning of cerebral hemispheres. Careful planning and construction will go a long way toward facilitating the control of vermin and insects without the use of organic insecticides and baits, especially wild or escaped rodents and cockroaches. Organic insecticides and baits should not be used in research animal facilities, because they have the potential to change biological baselines and alter the animal's response to experimental variables. The basic control approach is to seal vermin and insects out of the facility and eliminate hiding and nesting places within the facility. All cracks, joints, utility penetrations, lights, wall switches, communication, and power outlets must be sealed. Animal rooms should have a minimal amount of built-ins consisting of little more than a paper towel dispenser, utility hangers, and possibly a sink. These should be sealed to the wall or mounted away from the wall to eliminate hiding places and allow cleaning between the wall and the mounted item. Animal rooms should not have...
