Social Class And Status

Unlike the traditional culture of India, the United States has no system of social castes into which individuals are born and cannot escape. However, like other societies and even many animal species (e.g., DeVore, 1973), people in our society are evaluated and accorded status in terms of their appearance, skills, possessions, and group membership. Social status is related to a host of biological, cognitive, and affective variables, as well as demographic variables such as ethnicity and chronological age.
