urban poor became more impoverished and more isolated because of the decline of manufacturing and movement of many blue-collar jobs to suburban areas. The movement of jobs out of the urban areas eliminated a source of relatively well-paying, secure jobs for Blacks. Wilson also notes that joblessness increased among urban Blacks, reducing the pool of marriageable men and undermining the strength of the family.
Blacks have higher birth rates than whites, but the overall death rate is lower for Blacks because of a younger age structure, a smaller percentage of Blacks in the oldest age group most at risk of dying. The median age of Blacks was 27.7 years in 1989, nearly 5 years younger than the median for all Americans (O'Hare, Pollard, Mann, & Kent, 1991). Birth rates for White and Black men have declined steadily since 1990. Between 1990 and 1996, the birth rate for Black men aged 15-54 years dropped 20%.
