Planning and practical organization of therapy

NHS psychotherapy sessions usually take place weekly and last 50 minutes. All sessions should preferably be at the same time on the same day of the week in the same place. Punctuality by both patient and therapist is important. Interruptions, including phone calls, should be prevented. These practical rules provide patients with a secure framework in which to explore difficult issues.

Some therapists draw up a contract at the beginning to specify the patient's problems, goals of treatment, and proposed number of sessions.

Notes are written immediately afterward, but not during the session itself. Details of the content of sessions should not be revealed to other people except in the context of supervision seminars.

Some individual types of psychotherapy will now be described.
