Physical examination

All inpatients should have a physical examination, including a thorough neurological one. For outpatients, the responsibility for physical examination is generally accepted as remaining with the referrer; however, it is good practice to check for physical signs relevant to the case; for example, to look for signs of thyrotoxicosis in a patient with symptoms of anxiety, for injection marks in a patient with suspected intravenous drug use, or for extrapyramidal signs in a patient on antipsychotic drugs. Examination candidates should always check for selected physical signs such as these.
