Other mood stabilizers Carbamazine

Carbamazine is widely used as an anticonvulsant and for other indications such as atypical facial pain. It is an alternative for prophylaxis of affective disorder, being more effective or better tolerated than lithium in some patients. As with lithium, regular measurements of serum levels are necessary to make sure they are within the therapeutic range. In resistant cases, lithium and carbamazepine can be used together. It can cause or exacerbate blood (e.g. leucopenia), liver, and skin conditions; monitoring of full blood count, liver and renal function tests, and blood level of the drug is necessary.
