Mental Health Act Commission

This is a special multidisciplinary body, its members including doctors, nurses, social workers, lawyers, and laypersons. Its function is to see that detained patients are being cared for appropriately and that the Mental Health Act is being properly applied. Members visit every psychiatric unit in the country once or twice a year, and every Special Hospital at least once a month, to see detained patients, ensure the staff are adhering to the principles of the Act, and consider any complaints that have arisen. Appointed members provide independent second opinions.
