Learning disability

The other main permanent feature of an individual's mental make-up is his level of intelligence. The DSM helpfully codes both personality disorder and learning disability on the same Axis II. It used to be customary to do psychological testing of intelligence for many psychiatric patients, but this is now unusual unless there is a definite indication. Hence it is important to remember that mild degrees of learning disability can easily be missed.

A common situation in clinical practice would be a patient with low normal intelligence (IQ just over 70), but with the intelligence level making it much harder for the patient to cope with personality and/or mental health problems.
