Forensic psychiatry services

There has been a move away from thinking about forensic psychiatry mainly in terms of special inpatient units. Well-developed forensic psychiatry services are now characterized by a multidisciplinary, team-based, community approach, including:

• consultant forensic psychiatrist, and junior doctor(s)

• community psychiatric nurse and social worker

• psychologists

• administrative support.

They provide a range of services to courts and prisons, see referrals from general psychiatry colleagues, and work closely with probation. They carry a caseload of outpatients, and may be based partly at a Regional Secure Unit (see below).
