Controversy

Sceptics, such as Healy (http://www.healyprozac.com/), point out the close links between the pharmaceutical industry and the psychiatric academic establishment, as seen, for example, in industry-sponsored 'public awareness' initiatives such as the Defeat Depression campaign (http://www.rcpsych.ac.uk/campaigns/ defeat/index.htm).

This debate seems likely to run and run. Meanwhile, the NICE guidelines, perhaps for present purposes, offer(http://www.nice.org.uk/page.aspx?o=236667) a reasonable summary of figures on frequency of depression in the UK: 'The estimated point prevalence for major depression among 16- to 65-year-olds in the UK is 21/1000 (males 17, females 25), but, if the less specific and broader category of "mixed depression & anxiety" (F41.2, ICD-10, WHO, 1992) was included, these figures rise dramatically to 98/1000 (males 71, females 124).'
