Ensure a chaperone is present and that there is privacy. Remember the patient may feel anxious and embarrassed.
Explain that you are going to examine the woman internally and that it may be uncomfortable but that it should not be painful.
Inspect for any lumps, ulcers, discoloration, discharge and obvious prolapse.
Using lubricating jelly and gloved fingers, gently insert the first two fingers of the right hand into the vagina. Place the left hand above the symphysis pubis and push downwards gently into the pelvis.
Examine for the cervix, the uterus and the adnexa. Are there any masses, irregularities or abnormal tenderness?
