Bats own the night sky

Bats are extremely successful nocturnal mammal fliers. Their anatomy, physiology, and ecology are a finely tuned integration of many different body organs and organ systems that enable these animals to dominate the night sky. Bat adaptations for flight include more than just wings. The diet consists of high-calorie food that is easy to digest, assimilate, and pass quickly through the gut. They have solved thermoregu-latory problems ranging from the heat loss due to small size to the heat load of flight metabolism. The cardiovascular and respiratory systems are highly adapted for efficient distribution. All of these adaptations work together efficiently to make the bat a well-integrated nighttime flying machine.
