Biopsy Specimens

Small cervical colposcopic punch biopsies are examined intact at multiple histological levels. Loop and cone biopsies are measured (each individual fragment is measured in three dimensions), carefully sectioned into multiple serial blocks (Figure 24.2) and the entire tissue examined histologically. Each block is routinely cut into a standard and deeper H and E sections. Further levels can be obtained if histology shows a suspicious area or incomplete correlation with the preceding cytology. Wedge biopsies are measured in three dimensions, sectioned thinly and examined in their entirety at multiple histological levels.
