Protein Arrays

The advent of high-throughput protein expression systems has enabled the construction of protein arrays for the rapid screening of protein-biomolecule interactions (Smith et al., 2005). This includes the interaction of proteins with small molecules, other proteins, polynucleo-tides, phospholipids, and antibodies. For example, these platforms allow evaluation of the specificity (or cross-reactivity) of a given antibody toward a large matrix of different proteins. Another form of microarray is the tissue microarray (TMA). This can now be produced with good accuracy, permitting the rapid screening of a large number of human tissue sections for individual proteins (Uhlen and Ponten, 2005).
