NIA's Scientific Resources section also highlights a different type of experimental tool: longitudinal studies. The site contains an extensive list of such studies and provides a searchable database that allows the user to identify those that relate to a keyword (or keywords) of interest.

Other sites also cover this topic. In SAGE KE, ''Taking the Long View,'' the article discusses longitudinal studies in general and summarizes the goals of some on the NIA list as well as several others. Some population studies don't track people for many years; rather, they target—at least as their primary subjects— very old people with the hope of discovering keys to long life. The Okinawa Centenarian Study and the New England Centenarian Study, for instance, aim to uncover genetic and lifestyle characteristics that predispose people to outstanding health.
