particularly susceptible to brain damage in this model, whereas others (129Sv) are resistant (Sheldon et al., 1998). In addition, to obtain similar extent of injury in C57/Bl6 mice whatever their postnatal age, Zhu and coauthors adjusted the duration of the hypoxia (10% O2) time from 65 min (P5) to 60 min (P9), 50 min (P21) or 40 min (P60) (Zhu et al., 2005).

The Rice-Vannucci model has recently been adapted to the P1 (Sheldon et al., 1996) and P3 (Sizonenko et al., 2003; Stadlin et al., 2003) rat. However, the model performed in P1 was not so easily performed in other laboratories because survival was not possible. In the P3 rat pups, the mortality rat decreased from 33 to 0% with decreasing hypoxia duration (45 to 10 min, respectively).
