Neurological Assessment

The functional consequences of focal ischemic stroke injury are evaluated using a 5-point scale neurological deficit score (0, no deficit; 1, failure to extend right paw; 2, circling to the right; 3, falling to the right; and 4, unable to walk spontaneously) (Bederson et al., 1986). More recently, a 14-point neurological scoring system was developed (Li et al., 2000). This new scoring method includes the results of motor, reflex, and balance tests; a point is awarded for the inability to perform the test or for the lack of a tested reflex.
