Mitochondrial Changes During Aging

The preceding section illustrates that genetic alterations in the somatic cells employed as nuclear donors for SCNT exert effects on cloned embryo phenotypes. What of the mitochondrial genome? The mitochondrial theory of aging holds that mitochondria accumulate mutations as a result of damage by reactive oxygen species they generate, and that the accumulation of defective mitochondria leads ultimately to cellular senescence and tissue degeneration. The rate of repair relative to the incidence of DNA damage would affect the overall rate of accumulation of damaged mitochon-drial genomes.
