A cluster of age-associated immune alterations, including CMV status, designated the Immune Risk Phenotype (IRP) can be distinguished, which is predictive of mortality in longitudinal studies of the very elderly (Wikby et al., 2005). Refinement of this concept and its extension to younger individuals, using lessons learned from culture models and tests of intervention carried out in those models, may contribute to improved immunity, better health, and decreased mortality due to immuno-senescence.
