Housekeeping Functions

The molecular chaperones are a highly conserved class of proteins expressed constitutively or synthesized in response to stressful physiological conditions such as heat shock (cf. the term Heat Shock Proteins, or Hsp). The chaperones are essential for viability even under normal temperatures by assisting in housekeeping functions such as proofreading and correct folding of other proteins, RNA and DNA, preventing the aggregation of polymers and disgregation of misfolded molecules, facilitation of the transport of polymers across biological membranes, and participation in the degradation of ubiquitinated molecules.
