Extreme Retinal Periphery

Curcio et al. (1993) show the stability of the central cones and the reduction in the rods between the fiftieth and sixtieth year. This data contrasts with the results of Gao and Hollyfield (1992). In fact, these authors affirmed that at the temporal equator, the rod density reduces by 15% between the second and fourth decade, with a total loss of 32% by the ninth decade, and the cone density significantly reduces by 23% during the same period. These results indicate, together, that the peripheral retina ages in a different way in relationships with the central brain area of the vision (areas 17,18,19 of Brodmann, near the calcarina scissura).
