In this chapter, we outline the definition of epidemiology and its historical development as a scientific discipline. Various conceptual approaches to epidemiology in aging research are introduced and discussed. We present the major epidemiological study designs and epidemiological measures, with a particular emphasis on peculiarities of their application in aging research. We review major fields of application of epidemiology in aging research, and we give examples of past and current contributions of epidemiology to those fields. We outline the specific challenges, difficulties and opportunities encountered by epidemiologists in aging research. We end up with an outlook on major challenges and opportunities for further development of epidemiology in aging research.
