Drosophila in Aging Studies

Drosophila studies have been involved in many aging-related topics and have been instrumental in shaping our current view of aging. The success of the Drosophila model is no doubt helped by the availability of the variety of experimental approaches indicated above, which have been successfully used in combination on one topic, namely, demographic and genetic approaches in combination. Contributions of Drosophila studies can be roughly divided into four main areas: selection experiments on the evolution of aging; tests of metabolic and oxidative damage hypotheses of aging; dietary restriction; and searches for evolutionarily conserved genetic mechanisms of lifespan regulation. Though not necessarily mutually exclusive, each of these is presented below. They illustrate practical uses of various experimental approaches and how they can be combined to perform integrative studies; in addition, problems and future directions are also discussed.
