Serum total T concentrations fall with aging, and this may have adverse consequences for energy, sexual function, muscle mass and function, and bone. There also are unconfirmed reports that low total T levels are associated with increased risk of mortality due to cancer. Although increasing the serum T concentrations of elderly men to those of young men might prevent or reverse some of these changes, we do not know if TRT might increase several T-dependent diseases to which elderly men are prone. Thus, the benefit:risk ratio of TRT in aging men is not known.
