The importance of apoptosis was found to be dependent on brain immaturity and/or delayed development of tissue injury after mild cerebral ischemia in experimental models. Brain injury is a diffuse process with a range of developmental outcomes. Understanding the characteristics, strengths, and limitations of each of the relevant animal models will enable future studies to address mechanistic issues in smaller species such as rodents, and apply the information obtained to larger animals. In addition, these mechanistic issues will allow the development of new therapeutic strategies to provide long-term efficiency of this protection in terms of functional recovery in both the immature and mature brain.
