Iceland entered the twentieth century as an isolated founder population of poor sheep farmers and small-scale fishermen, but at the turn of the twenty-first century Iceland has been transformed into a knowledge-based high-tech society whose still interrelated and aging population will deliver important lessons on the interactions between age-associated diseases, the environment, and genetic components. Ultimately, cutting-edge aging research in Iceland can contribute to our understanding of how to maintain better health, independence, and active participation in later life.
