Basal Membrane

The basal side of the RPE lies on a basement membrane that is uniform in thickness throughout the retina. The basal cell membrane shows only a few in-folding. The cell membrane on the apical side is like that in the nonpigmented epithelium; there are numerous cell junctions. The lateral surfaces show interdigitations (Hogan et al, 1971). The basal membrane is made up of collagen connective tissue and contains some specific proteins named membrane bound protein (MBP) and proteoglycans (PG).
