Physiological Modulation

Some microorganisms have a specific effect on enzymatic, hematological, and other parameters monitored in the animal during an experiment, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) elevating virus in mice inhibiting the clearance of LDH and a number of other enzymes203 being the classical example. Also, mouse hepatitis virus alters the hepatic enzyme activity.204 Such organic function disturbances may change the outcome of the experiment, e.g., the altered function of the liver and macrophages in mice infected with mouse hepatitis virus, may lead to an altered response in toxicology, nutrition, and other items in which the liver is involved.205 Such disturbances may be irreversible for some drugs, while reversible for other drugs, as it has been described in mice infected with Clostridium piliforme.206
