Modulation of Oncogenesis

Infectious agents may induce cancer, enhance the oncogenic effect of certain oncogens, or reduce the incidence of cancer in laboratory animals. Spontaneous tumors represent the most important implication in studies with aging animals or other long-term studies. Retroviruses214 and Helicobacter spp.32 may be oncogenic. Some microorganisms, e.g., Mycoplasma pulmonis215 and Citrobacter rodentium,216 that are not primary oncogens may increase, while other organisms, e.g., Salmonella217,218,219 and H1 parvovirus,220,221,222 may decrease the incidence of specific tumors.
