Lung Injury

Current aerosol irritant assays use mice in noxious atmospheres. For this reason, the Minimal Animal Stress Irritant Assay Chamber (MASIAC) has been developed based on the principle of avoidance.30 The MASIAC can detect citric acid with more sensitivity than conventionally used assays. Responses were not significantly affected by the presence of other mice, and following multiple exposures to citric acid, the mice either sensitized to the irritant, or learned to avoid it. This new method could provide investigators with an alternative method of evaluating pulmonary irritants.
