With the steady increase in international collaborations in animal research, testing, and teaching, there is a concomitant increase in a need to be familiar with the standards of oversight in different countries. This task has been made difficult by the lack of a single, concise compilation of the laws, rules, regulations, policies, and guidelines in use around the world, and by their constant evolution toward a more restrictive stance. The goal of this chapter is to provide an introduction to the governance of animal use in a variety of countries, with more detail provided for certain parts of the world than others, due to the greater complexity of standards to be met in those countries.
