Genetically Undefined Stocks Outbred Stocks

An outbred stock is a breeding group of genetically heterogeneous animals that are usually maintained as a closed colony, without the introduction of animals from another stock or strain. The degree of genetic variation depends on the previous history of the colony. Colonies founded with a small number of pairs or that are maintained with relatively few breeding animals per generation will tend to lose genetic variation, and in some cases, the colony may become moderately or highly inbred. Outbred stocks are available for all species of laboratory animals.
