Bacterial Infections

Bacterial infections may cause disease as well as other negative consequences for research. It should also be noticed that most animals for research harbor a normal flora,2 which normally does not interfere with research. Some bacteria even have a positive impact on the animal. So, laboratory animals not housed in isolators cannot, in the same way as it may be applied for viruses, be kept free of all bacteria, and for most research projects, this is not necessary. Specific bacteria of rodents and rabbits are listed in Table 11.1.
