Risk Factor Interactions

Table 5 summarizes the data supporting the role of three major risk factors for HIT: heparin type (UFH > LMWH), patient type (surgical > medical), and patient gender (female > male) (Warkentin et al., 2006a). (A fourth major risk factor, namely duration of heparin therapy, is not shown.) Note that the influence of heparin type is most striking in a female patient receiving postoperative thrombo-prophylaxis: HIT is much more likely to occur with UFH than with LMWH in such a patient (OR, 17.39 [95% CI, 4.22-71.70]; p < 0.0001); in contrast, the benefit of LMWH is significantly less in males receiving post-surgical thromboprophylaxis (Table 5).
