NIH Image was developed by Wayne Rasband at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). It is public domain software and can be obtained from the NIH Image Web site (http:// rsb.info.nih.gov/nih-image/) or by anonymous FTP from zippy.nimh.nih.gov. NIH Image is primarily an analysis tool, rather than a development tool for image processing applications.
NIH Image runs on the Macintosh and can acquire, display, edit, enhance, analyze, and animate images (Fig. 15). It reads and writes TIFF, PICT, PICS, and MacPaint files, and it is compatible with other programs for scanning, processing, editing, publishing, and analyzing images. It supports many standard image processing functions, including contrast enhancement, density profiling, smoothing, sharpening, edge detection, median filtering, and spatial convolution with user-defined kernels. Images can be processed with various arithmetic operations that include add, subtract, multiply, or divide by a constant, as well as logic operations.
