There are two approaches for creating displays in IDL: direct graphics and object graphics. Direct graphics maintain the same dimension, and displays are created on the screen by directly sending the data to the display by an IDL command. In object graphics, displays are created as "objects" in the object-oriented approach. The displays can be manipulated, for example, resized, as objects. Although direct graphics are faster, object graphics have more flexibility.

For an additional cost, IDL also provides a two-CD collection of Visible Human, which includes more than 20,000 image slices through a human male and female with axial, sagittal, and coronal views. There are color photographs along with magnetic resonance data and computed tomography images. The images can be interactively animated, annotated, and highlighted, bookmarked for reference, or exported.
