Since the topology of an ANN or a BBN depends on a set of features and the distribution of weights inside the network depends on a set of training data, both the database and selected features play important roles in determining the training and testing performance of the network. Figure 3 shows a schematic representation of the process of evaluating the performance of a classifier using either an ANN or a BBN in medical image processing. In the figure, collection of sample data (or images) is the first step for building and testing a machine learning classification system. In this section, several issues related to the database selection are discussed.
