(R)- and (S)-b-Aminoisobutyrate

In mammals, thymine is transformed to (R)-b-aminoisobutyric acid [(R)-10] analogously to the conversion of uracil to ยก-alanine 3 (Scheme 1.6.2). (S)-b-aminoiso-butyric acid [(S)-10] is a degradation product of L-valine 17 in mammals, generated in a multistep reaction via (S)-2-methylmalonic acid semialdehyde 23 [1] (Scheme 1.6.5).
