The side-effects of isotretinoin are very numerous [2, 30-32]. In the studies mentioned, no serious side-effects are reported. In patients who are treated with isotretinoin (mostly for 16 weeks), liver function tests and determination of lipid profiles have to be performed at baseline and on one occasion after 4 weeks [31]. Teratogenicity is by far the most serious of all the side-effects of retinoids and requires responsible prescribing by physicians and reliable patients [31, 32]. Women of child-bearing age must not start therapy until a negative pregnancy test result within 1 week before starting therapy has been obtained.
