Melanoma of the head and neck regions presents a challenging clinical problem. The importance of full-thickness biopsy for pathological staging and surgical planning cannot be overemphasized. Improvements in staging conferred by SNB have increased our knowledge of the disease, while decreasing the possible complications. With its highly metastatic nature, melanoma is potentially life-threatening in all but its earliest stages, but with adequate surgical therapy, most patients with clinically localized disease will be salvaged.
