Energy therapies

Energy therapies is a collective term used to refer to a variety of alternative and complementary treatments based on the use, modification, or manipulation of energy fields. Most energy therapies presuppose or accept the theory that matter and energy are not exclusive opposites, but that matter is simply a denser form of energy that is more easily perceived by the senses. Some energy therapies are associated with systems of traditional Indian or Chinese medicine that are thousands of years old others draw upon contemporary scientific theories. Energy therapies can be divided for purposes of discussion into two groups those that utilize energy fields located in, affecting, or emanating from the human body (biofield therapies) and those that use electromagnetic fields in unconventional ways. In addition, there are energy therapies that combine biofield therapy with some aspects of bodywork Breema, polarity therapy, and qigong are examples of this combined approach. Energy therapies...

The holistic approach to management

In a healing profession obsessed with interventionism, invasive technology and drug management, the general practitioner has an obligation to his or her patients to use natural healing methods wherever possible and be very discerning and conservative with investigatory medicine. Patients appreciate natural remedies and taking responsibility for their own management wherever possible and appropriate. Examples include relative rest, exercise, swimming, stress management, meditation, spiritual awareness, antioxidant therapy (e.g. vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium), weight control, optimal healthy nutrition, avoidance of toxins (e.g. illicit drugs, nicotine, caffeine and alcohol) and sexual fulfilment.

Crosscultural Issues And Spirituality

To the Muslim, God is the ultimate healer. Islam teaches that the patient must be treated with respect and compassion, and that the physical, mental, and spiritual dimensions of the illness must be taken into account. Many Muslims invoke the name of God in daily conversation, pray five times a day facing Mecca, and wash prior to prayer. They believe that their actions are accountable and subject to ultimate judgment (16). Traditional Chinese medicine views the body and spirit as an integrated whole. This perspective is influenced primarily by Confucianism, but also by Taoism and Buddhism. Illness is believed to be a result of an imbalance of a vital energy force called I qi R and yin and yang (19). Mankind and nature are considered interdependent harmony of this nature-human relationship is vital to health (20). In the Native American population, healing, spirituality, and culture are closely intertwined. Intuition and spiritual awareness are a healer's most...

Community Awareness Education and other Control Measures

Education, particularly in concert with the support of local traditional healers and religious leaders, has proven a valuable component of outbreak control in the African setting as some cultural and traditional practices can be counterproductive, particularly those associated with certain burial practices. After death, cadavers should be buried or burned immediately and sheets, gloves and clothing that have been in contact with patients also need to be burned (CDC, 2005c). Finally, an integral part of the control of Lassa fever is effective control of the rodents that harbour the virus.

Preventing Promoting And Maintaining

These psychosocially, spiritually, and culturally oriented efforts are more than preventive. To label them in this way understates their meaning and begs the question of an ethical responsibility to promote the mental health of elders. Clearly, ''prevention'' connotes avoidance of the negative, that is, illness or disease or ''symptoms,'' without directly addressing the enhancement of mental health. We contend that just as in some sports ''the best defense is a good offense,'' in mental health the best prevention is the active promotion of mental well-being.

Specific Multicultural Issues

Folk beliefs are part of the belief system of many African Americans, and clinicians should be prepared to include this system in the overall assessment and treatment of the case. Problems experienced by many members of this community might be perceived not only as resulting from physical (e.g., HIV) and environmental causes (poverty, racism) but also from occult or spiritual factors (e.g., evil spirits, supernatural forces, violation of sacred beliefs, or sin). In the second case, folk healers might be consulted for treatment. resources include el curandero (for men) or la curandera (for women) and el brujo or la bruja (witch doctor). For example, these folk healers may recommend that Hispanics with HIV AIDS wear statues of saints or beads around the necks or wrists to protect the individuals from supernatural causes of illness (Boyd-Franklin et al., 1995, p. 66). d. American Indians Role of Healers and Tribal Leaders The fourth variable involves the role of healers and tribal...

Features of selfhelp groups

The final step in a 12-step program recognizes that recovery entails a spiritual awakening furthermore, recovering addicts are enjoined to spread the message to others suffering from addiction. Recovery depends on giving up both injurious self-will and denial of maladap-tive behavior, and turning to a higher power. Members are urged to seek guidance or inspiration from this higher power. For many addicts, the key to recovery is a spiritually guided movement away from self-centeredness or self-absorption, and a turning towards the Power greater than ourselves through prayer and meditation.

Frequent Skin Problems In Newborns Diaper Dermatitis

Diaper candidiasis is a fungal-infected diaper dermatitis. The most common causative agent is a yeast fungus called Candida albicans. It is a known fact that extensive use of antibiotics in newborns and small children increases that incidence of diaper candidiasis. Initially, diaper candidiasis can be treated with a specific antimycotic therapy (nystatin, clotrimazole), then followed up with the healing methods for basic diaper dermatitis as previously described 22 .

Nonwestern Medical Systems Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has existed for thousands of years, long before Western medicine. Rather than following the disease model of Western medicine, TCM focuses on a symptom approach such that a person with PD who has mostly tremor would be evaluated and treated differently than another person whose symptoms were mostly gait and balance difficulty with no tremor. The specific symptoms of the individual signal a deficiency in the body fluids blood that is unable to properly nourish the energy flow or chi or Qi of the entire organism. There are three main symptom approaches under TCM (5). The first is Qi and blood deficiency, which is believed to arise from anger, emotional stress, frustration, and resentment. The second is phlegm-fire-agitating wind (yang), which is the result of poor diet, in particular eating greasy, fried, sweet, sugary foods and alcohol. The third is kidney and liver (yin) deficiency, which results from a lack of rest and overwork as well as part of...

Spiritual Needs Of Older Adults Versus Younger Adults

Separate ourselves from our parents or guardians. Young adulthood has us pursuing our dreams, entering our career paths, and marrying and having children. When middle age approaches, we are confronted with some physical problems, maybe for the first time in our lives. Our careers are in full swing, or we decide to change career paths. We are caring for our children, and some of us are even caring for our elderly parents. Life may become complicated. We begin to anticipate our own mortality. As we enter into our elder years, we may need to address the negative stereotypes of aging and physical disabilities, and we are more certain than ever of the reality of our mortality. As we age physically and mentally, we also need to develop spiritually. In the words of an older woman (93 years of age) ''When I was five years old, I had and needed a simplistic faith. I could not handle anything else however, now at age 93 that simplistic faith will not do. My needs are very different.'' This...

Physiologic Effects Of Acupuncture

Acupuncture involves stimulation of specific anatomical locations on the skin to alter energy flow patterns throughout the body. The skin can be stimulated by manual or electrical stimulation or the more typical placement of small metallic needles. Acupuncture has been used in China for thousands of

The Psychobiology Of Stress

CRH-producing cells in the hypothalamus receive input from other limbic, hypothalamic, and brain-stem nuclei. As discussed later, NE is a major stimulus of CRH activity in response to psychological stressors. However, multiple neurotransmitter and neuropeptide systems, beyond the NE system, are involved in regulating CRH (Palkovits, 1987). Furthermore, hypothalamic CRH-producing cells also receive input from other nuclei in the hypothalamus, particularly those involved in daily energy flow (Dallman et al., 1993). The net result is that the production of cortisol is not a direct reflection of the individual's emotional state. Rather, it reflects the extent to which signals impinging on the hypothalamus from all sources indicate that extraordinary resources can and must be expended in order to meet the demands of the moment.

Characteristics of Red Blood Cells

Red blood cells have nuclei during their early stages of development but extrude them as the cells mature, which provides more space for hemoglobin. Since they lack nuclei, red blood cells cannot synthesize messenger RNA or divide. Because they also lack mitochondria, red blood cells produce ATP through glycolysis only, and use none of the oxygen they carry. As long as cytoplasmic enzymes function, these can carry on vital energy-releasing processes. With time, however, red blood cells become less and less active. Typically, this leads to more rigid red blood cells that are more likely to be damaged or worn, and eventually removed by the spleen and liver.

Alternativecomplimentary Treatment

Alternative medicine has been defined as the use of various treatment modalities that are not usually used in traditional medicine, taught in medical schools, or covered by insurance companies. Terminology, however, is changing and these treatments are being incorporated more and more into traditional therapies and hence the term complimentary medicine is now used more frequently (Complimentary-Alternative Medicine CAM ). In 1991, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) established the office for Alternative Medicine to address the growing use of these treatments. It has been estimated that two-thirds of the American population has used some form of CAM (59). Of importance, 70 ofthose patients using CAM did not disclose this use to their physician (60). In 1998 the Alternative Medicine office changed its name to the National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM). Alternative therapies include things such as imagery, biofeedback, acupuncture, reiki, dietary...

Traditional Medicine

Indian cooking is based on the therapeutic principles of ancient Ayurvedic medicine. This Ayurvedic philosophy of eating dictates the blending and preparation of spices, as well as how foods are balanced, to achieve well-being. Ayurveda combines two words, ayu, which means life, and veda, which means knowledge. This system of healing has been practiced in India for more than 5000 years. It is based on prevention and well-being and looks at the causes of disease and the ways they occur. It is based on the life force or prana, that flows easily into every cell of the body and which is accomplished by eating the right foods, by deep breathing techniques, and by following a healthy lifestyle. In an Ayurvedic meal, the ingredients are chosen not only for taste but also to assure physical and emotional harmony and well-being. Ayurveda emphasizes prevention of disease through the pursuit of mental, physical, and emotional harmony.

Hypochondriasis

Relative to the client's cultural background and explanatory models (Chaplin, 1997). For example, traditional healers assisting Hispanics with the management of medical problems might disagree with the medical evaluation and findings provided by a physician. This disagreement could reinforce the client's folk beliefs about disease (DSM-IV, 1994, p. 464). An emphasis on the medical evaluation and the absence of significant findings to confirm the presence of a given disease would probably compete-with beliefs among Hispanic clients regarding the role of bad spirits and malevolent witchcraft that could result in medical problems, as well as with the belief regarding the role of healers (curanderos curanderas) in the solution of medical problems (Paniagua, 1998). As noted by Castillo (1997), clients holding these beliefs would continue looking for the right physician if the medical condition is not evaluated and managed with the assistance of healers in a given culture.

Owls And People

Through the ages, owls have been the subjects of myth, folklore, and art. People have used owls in different ways. Snowy owls are a subsistence food for Arctic people. Owl body parts are used by traditional healers in Southeast Asia. They have been revered in some cultures. In ancient Babylon, for example, pregnant women wore protective owl amulets. In many cultures, however, owls have been feared. The Swahili believed owls made children sick. Some Arab cultures believed owls were evil spirits that carried children off. In the twenty-first century, conservationists are working to overcome old superstitions and protect owls threatened by loss of habitat.

Massage Therapy

There are over 100 massages or body energy therapies such as deep tissue Swedish, craniosacral, acupressure or Shiatsu, rolfing, myofacial release, reflexology, hot rock, and soft light tissue techniques such as Rekki. Although there are no double-blind, controlled studies supporting massage as a specific treatment of PD, it may have a role as an adjunctive treatment of muscle rigidity and associated pain as well as stress reduction and promotion of a sense of well being.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is thought to restore health by removing energy imbalances and blockages in the body. Practitioners of TCM believe that there is a vital force or energy called qi (pronounced chee) that flows through the body, and between the skin surface and the internal organs, along channels or pathways called meridians. There are 12 major and 8 minor meridians. Qi regulates the spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical harmony of the body by keeping the forces of yin and yang in balance. Yang is a principle of heat, activity, brightness, outwardness, while yin represents coldness, passivity, darkness, interiority, etc. TCM does not try to eliminate either yin or yang, but to keep them in harmonious balance. Acupuncture may be used to raise or lower the level of yin or yang in a specific part of the body in order to restore the energy balance. Meridians In traditional Chinese medicine, a network of pathways or channels that convey qi (also sometimes spelled ki), or vital energy,...

Christian Faith Healing And The Power Of Miracles

Christian Faith Healing And The Power Of Miracles

The Path Of Receiving Supernatural Healing As Jesus Healed. In ancient times faith healing was widely accepted as the only form of healing for both physical and mental health problems. As the development of science had not yet come about or even existed, this process was considered authentic, especially when positive results were achieved.
