The pathologist plays an integral and crucial role in every step of the management of patients with germ cell tumors. Precise, definitive, and conclusive determination of tumor morphology and integration of gross and microscopic findings as well as clinical, physical, imaging, and serologic findings are all key elements in the adequate diagnosis and management of children and adolescents with these tumors.
This review of the pathology of germ cell tumors in children and adolescents is abbreviated since an excellent general oversight precedes this chapter (see Chapter 4). It is meant to complement that overview with a discussion of the pathology of the most important aspects of these conditions from a pediatric perspective.
