A few species are cited on the IUCN Red List. The queen triggerfish, Balistes vetula (Balistidae), the Rapa Island toby, Canthigaster rapaensis (Tetraodontidae), and the blunthead puffer, Liosaccus (= Sphoeroides) pachygaster (Tetraodontidae), are listed as Vulnerable. Five additional species in the family Tetradontidae are listed as Data Deficient. Various species may be at risk from overfishing (as a target species or as by-catch) or habitat destruction. The European Community prohibits the trade of pufferfish products.
