The first genetic linkage map for the cultivated tetraploid tobacco was recently published (Bindler et al. 2007). For this work, SSR primers were identified through sequences provided by the Tobacco Genome Initiative (http://www.tobaccogenome.org), and 293 loci were successfully mapped. In addition to the Tobacco Genome Initiative, there is a European effort, the European Sequencing of Tobacco project (http://www.estobacco.info). Previous mapping had been done in members of the genus other than Nicotiana tabacum. For example, comparisons of the linkage maps of N. sylvestris and N. plumbagini-folia revealed significant intrageneric genome reorganization (Lin et al. 2001).
