Ghrelin Receptors

Ghrelin is a gastrointestinal peptide that stimulates food intake and growth hormone secretion.57 In certain tumors, specifically pituitary adenomas, gastrointestinal car-cinoids, and endocrine tumors of the pancreas, production of ghrelin has been detected.5859 The actions of ghrelin are mediated by specific receptors (GHS-R types 1a and b) that regulate GH release-related functions and have also been shown to regulate growth control activities in tumor cells.61 Recent reports indicate that the GHS-R displays high constitutive activity that may play a causative role in onset of aberrant proliferation.61
