GPCR expression has been evaluated in all potentially applicable expression systems available today. Several examples demonstrate successful expression of several GPCRs to provide materials from bacteria, yeast, insect, and mammalian cells. Supplying drug screening programs with GPCRs for binding assays can be considered a routine process because the requirements are fairly easy to meet. The toughest task is to provide material for structural biology and particularly crystallography. As demonstrated, both the quantity and quality of expressed GPCRs play crucial roles. Other components such as the lipid compositions of membranes may be extremely important and these issues must be addressed in more depth. The need to develop additional technology to achieve success in determining and applying the structural biologies of GPCRs is clear.
