Segmentation Techniques

A large number of segmentation techniques have been proposed and implemented (see [14,17-19]) but there is still no gold standard approach that satisfies all of the aforementioned criteria. In general, segmentation techniques can be divided into four major classes:

• Thresholding

• Edge-based segmentation

• Region-based segmentation

• Pixel classification

These techniques are commonly employed in two-dimensional image segmentation [1,17-21]. A brief review of these techniques will be given in this section. More advanced techniques such as model-based approaches, multimodal approaches, and multivariate approaches, and their applications will be introduced and discussed latter in this chapter.
