Health professionals are likely to agree that personality disorder is common and difficult to treat but beyond this generalisation there is limited consensus. Despite the controversies and ambiguities that characterise work in this field, there has been increasing interest in developing psychological therapies for treatment of personality disorder. This chapter presents the evidence base for these therapies, which is modest but encouraging and justifies the growing optimism among those working in this area.
