Conclusion

Our understanding of GAD has advanced significantly since the mid-1980s and there is no doubt that chronic tension and worry are both significant sources of human distress and important vulnerability factors for physical and psychiatric morbidity. Unfortunately, the presence of GAD is frequently overlooked in clinical settings and our current therapies are ineffective for a significant minority of sufferers. Future developments in enhancing treatment efficacy are likely to come from recent improvements to existing therapies that are promising but not yet fully tested and from flexible methods of service delivery that offer brief interventions emphasizing self-management as well as intensive therapy for those with complex presentations.
